It's Camp NaNoWriMo & other frivolous undertakings of summer.

Hello lovelies,

So today is brought to you by hectic list making, non stop outfit rearranging, and trying to stuff a bunch of clothes into one suitcase. Does anyone else out there dislike packing?
Ok good. It's not just me.
But the pains of packing do bring with them one awesome truth: it's VACATION TIME!!!!!

If you follow me on twitter, you know how much I need a vacation. I think my tweets have become complain-y (sorry about that). Anyway, in the midst of all the chaos (because seriously, chaos is the most accurate word describing my room right now) I realized it's July 2nd. Where in the world did June go?
The main reason why I slightly panicked at the fact that its day two of July is because I'm supposed to be participating in Camp NaNoWriMo. My goal is 50,000 words before the end of the month. Which means I'm supposed to be writing almost 1700 words a day. Oops and double oops. Did I mention the fact that I forgot it was July?
Seriously though, I'm determined to get this done. The book I'm writing right now is fun and different and I love it to pieces. But with a week long vacation, and all the hectic-ness that comes with summer, how am I going to find time to write? (I'm asked this question way too often). So let me tell you how.
By writing.
Amazing concept right?
I think sometimes we forget that everyone has the same amount of hours in the day. It's all about the way you prioritize. Writing is what I do. It's what I love. So it's a natural extension of my day.
Makes sense.
On the other hand, I've read some awesome books lately that I fully recommend adding to your TBR.

Hmm, not exactly sure how I ended up reading cooking books back to back, but now I've got myself a whole list of recipes to try out. I'll be posting full reviews for these books in the next few weeks, but for now all you need to know is that they are amazing and you need to read them. I said so.

Well, I'm off to try and make sense of this mess that currently occupies my bedroom.

Any exciting plans for July?

Much love,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout

There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

From Goodreads. com
Review:

If you guys follow me for any length of time you know I’m a bit obsessive over Jennifer’s writing. You have no idea how excited I was to read this book. My two sentence review on Goodreads states: “Holy *blip blipedy blip* Jen is freaking fabulous...ya thats all you people get for now, and thats really all you need to know.” And I’m not kidding. What Jennifer began so cleverly in Half-Blood, she continues in Pure.

This book starts out where the first one ends. The relationships between all the characters are taken to a new level, the action (yes, even that kind of action) is ever present, and the storyline continues to grow. I can’t seriously talk about this book without wanting to give everything away.
Alex and Seth are pretty much joined at the hip and this puts strains on everyone. Alex is one of my absolutely favorite YA heroines. She’s real, strong, fearsome, and yet there is a side to her that’s just a little girl wanting to be loved. I love the contrast and Jennifer does it well. Throughout the whole book, Alex continues to grow and I love seeing her character develop.
Aiden, oh my freaking goodness AIDEN!!! Really, do I need to say anything else? No? I knew it, but I’m going to say things anyway. :) Aiden is one of my all time favorite male hero’s (notice a pattern here?). There’s so much about him that’s wonderful. He’s not only strong, hard working, honorable, sweet, kind individual but he’s flipping hot as well *fans self* The sacrifices he makes in Pure will blow your mind! His relationship with Alex is so sweet and heartbreaking I just want to hug him to pieces.
Seth is a huge part of Pure and you have to love and hate him at the same time. His relationship with Alex develops in a unique way, putting a strain on pretty much everything Alex thinks and does. There is so much between these two that you will not see coming. There are plot twist and new characters and things you that will leave you speechless.
Pure is pure awesomeness, pure greatness, pure piece of fabulous literature. Jennifer created a world that is unique and beautiful in its own way and characters that make you laugh, cry, and love them all. As a writer, Jennifer pushes me in my own work to create something as fabulous as this. If you guys haven’t read these books, I highly recommend it. Pure now available in digital format from amazon and the official release date for print is April 3rd! Get it, read it, love it!
Much love,
Valia
PS I’d love to hear your thoughts. :-D

Series Spotlight: The Watchers by Veronica Wolff

Is life offering fewer and fewer options? Then join the dead.
When Annelise meets dark and seductive Ronan, he promises her a new life-if she has the courage to chance the unknown. Now, she's whisked away to a mysterious island and pitted against other female recruits to become a Watcher-girls who are partnered with vampires and assist them in their missions. To survive and become a Watcher, Annelise has to beat out every other girl, but she's determined to do so, because to fail doesn't mean dishonor-it means death.

IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE PARTNERED WITH A VAMPIRE, YOU HAVE TO WORK THE NIGHT SHIFT.

By her wits, blood, and sacrifice, so far Drew has survived the intensive training on the Isle of Night. As a second-year Acari, her ultimate goal is to become a Watcher, and now she has a shot at her first mission. Except nothing is as it seems. The vampire Alcántara is as sinister as he is sexy, Ronan is more distant than ever, and it turns out there are other vampires out there. Bad ones.

Ancient, bloodthirsty, and powerful, these undead are really old school. They’ve captured one of the Watcher vamps and are torturing him for information. The only chance to save him is to infiltrate a major summit the baddies are holding on their own island. There will be mortals there, serving as butlers, maids, and various hired help. Drew had better brush up on her skills as a serving girl, because she’s about to go undercover…

But, when their vampire prisoner turns out to be a gorgeous bad boy, Drew’s first mission quickly turns into more than she bargained for…

(From Goodreads.com)
I have to say that I’m in love with this series! Drew is such a strong character, who has to overcome the obstacles of her life. She’s a fighter and she keeps on fighting. I like her consistency throughout the book, struggling to free herself from the bullies of the world. She’s one of those characters that you can relate to, even though she’s part of a supernatural world.
Ronan is...oh goodness...is...just perfect. I’m team Ronan all the way! I love the way Ronan and Drew’s relationship develops. It’s not love at first sight for them, they work at becoming something other than strangers. Sometimes I think that aspect is overlooked in books because we dive right into the romance aspects. But in this story, I was right there with Drew wondering if Ronan is more than just a protector, if they can be something other then Acari and Tracer.
In the second book, everything I loved about book one is there but also, everything changes. New characters are introduced that throw a spin into the world that Drew is just beginning to understand. Both books are action packed and fast pasted. I love seeing Drew kick some serious butt. Her friends Emma and Yas are a great addition to the list of characters, and its fun watching them interact.
I also enjoyed the aspect of vampires being the hungry monsters rather than teenage heartthrobs. Veronica went a little farther back in her vampire lore, creating a creature that is to be feared, but who also stays intriguing.
Overall, this series requires a reading! If you enjoy action packed, relationship driven, mythology loving stories, The Watchers is a series for you. I’m dying to know what happens in book 3 (even as I’m terrified after some of the events in book 2). Vampire’s Kiss, book 2 in the Watchers series hits shelves March 6th!
Have you read this series? What are your thoughts?
Happy reading,
Valia

A Walk in the Park with Veronica Rossi

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!

Hello lovelies,
Welcome to another Walk in the Park with your favorite author! I have to say I'm super excited about today's guest. Veronica Rossi is the debut author of Under the Never Sky (Review here). I absolutely and completely loved that book and Veronica is quickly turning out to be one of my favorite people! Everyone, please welcome Veronica Rossi!

*round of applause*

Welcome Veronica! Thank you so much for taking the time to take a little “walk” with me.
Under the Never Sky is a fabulous story. (I’m seriously in love with the story. I couldn’t put it down. But you’ll see that in my review lol) The world building is truly fascinating. What was the inspiration behind the world you created?
Thank you, Valia! The world came out of a desire to compare past and future, technological advancement with something primitive. I read a lot and spent time brainstorming for a few weeks and it began to come together.
Aria is a strong character who overcomes a lot challenges before her. (I really liked how she struggles to overcome the prejudice of the world she grew up in.) What was the hardest part in writing her?
Well, to be honest, the hardest part was staying true to her prejudices! In the beginning of the story, she had to be terrified, and a little cruel. Her exile into the outer world wouldn't ring true otherwise.
Perry is a very complex individual. (and fascinating, and *le sigh* I love me some tortured heroes.) His struggles are very compelling within the story.  What was the best part in writing him?
I love writing Perry because he's quiet on the surface but there's a lot going on underneath. He's very loyal and incredibly kind, once you get through his walls. He's just a blast to write.
I know you’ve mentioned this before but who was your favorite character to write and why?
This question is practically unanswerable! Of course, the two leads. I also adore writing Roar and Marron. Soren was quite fun, as is Hess. See? I'm just naming them all....
What can you tell us about the rest of the series? (CANNOT wait!!! :-)
: ) Thank you! Well, I'm working on it now, and I'll say that the stakes really climb. The Aether ramps up, and people start to panic and make some surprising--and sometimes poor--decisions. The Still Blue goes from being a rumor, to the only chance for survival.
What is one thing you wish you knew before beginning writing?
How much patience it takes! And that revision is the best part of the process. I could revise endlessly and be happy.
Do you think being an artist helped you as a writer? (Sometimes I feel it helps me to take a break from writing and just paint or have a photo shoot.)
That's great to hear! And I do think my art background brought something to my writing. I'm extremely visual. I need to be able to see the things I write.
Coffee or Tea (I always seem to ask this question) :)
Coffee in the morning. Tea in the afternoon.
Favorite Desert
Not much for dessert, but I'll say anything chocolate!
One world you wish you could live in
Whatever world my sons and husband are in :D
Favorite book growing up
Anything Judy Blume, and then later, anything Tolkein or Arthurian.
Thank you so much for joining me on my “Walk in the Park”!!!
Thanks so much for having me, Valia!

So, what are you guys waiting for? Have you checked out Under the Never Sky? What do you think?

Much love,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.

DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answer.

From Goodreads.com

Aria is a Dweller. Perry is an Outsider. One night, their paths are brought together and then everything changes. This book pulled me right in. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed Aria and Perry's characters (along with everyone else). There is so much truth in these pages, written with excellence that will leave you wanting more. But I digress.

Aria is a wonderful character. From the beginning of the book she is growing and developing. When she is kicked out of her home, she's in despair. Yet, she doesn't give up, she becomes a fighter.
Perry has always been a fighter. After all, his life requires him to kill or be killed. When his world crashes around him, he must make decisions he never thought he would. These two become allies.
I loved Aria and Perry's characters and their relationship. Nothing about their world is easy, including the alliance they develop, and that is the beauty of the book. Veronica created a place of pain, brought two characters together, and taught them that not everything is how it seems. Even though I wouldn't want to live in a world filled with Aether and storms that burn your flesh, I wouldn't mind finding myself a Perry. This book is filled with twists and turns, beautiful characters, and a lesson we all must learn. Beauty is found in the deepest hearts of people. I sat, stunned after reading the last page of the book and I cannot wait for more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dystopian genre and characters that stay with you long after the pages are read.

Veronica is a sweetheart and she will be stopping by a "Walk in the Park" in the near future. I hope you guys get your hands on Under the Never Sky and come back to hear a few insides about the story.

Have you guys read this book? What are your thoughts?

Much love,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

NEWSOUL
Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.

NOSOUL
Even Ana’s own mother thinks she’s a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she’ll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are suspicious and afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?

HEART
Sam believes Ana’s new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana’s enemies—human and creature alike—let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else’s life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?

From Goodreads.com

Review:
Incarnate is a story of Ana, a Newsoul. Ana was born into a world where she should not exist. Newsouls are not part of the rotation, until she comes along. Everyone, including her own mother, looks at Ana as if she's a mistake, as if she's the enemy. After all if one soul didn't return, how many are next?
So Ana decides to find some answers. Enter Sam, a handsome stranger who saves her and welcomes her in when no one else would. Their relationship blossoms in a beautiful and sweet way that makes your heart smile. I very much enjoyed watching their relationship develop because it felt real and heartwarming. Ana is a fabulous character who has to overcome many obstacles, while her love for music keeps her grounded. Sam the guy every girl wants. He's real, kind, and looks beyond the obvious into what is truly important.
If being the "new kid on the block" isn't enough, dangers lurk on every corner. When sylph and dragons attack, no one is safe. Opposition follows Ana on every side whether it is human or creature. Yet, thru it all, Ana learns, fights, and develops in a way that makes for a great story.
Jodi creates a world full of wonder, lovable characters, dangerous creatures, and a love that breaks all barriers. This world is just as magical as it is real. I cannot wait to see what happens next! This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting for more.
Incarnate comes out January 31, 2012! Get it, read it, love it! Also, I'll be posting a very special interview with Jodi on Monday. Look for that (and maybe even a giveaway).

Much love,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Destined by Jessie Harrell - Interview & Giveaway!

Hello minions!
Today I have a very special guest on the blog. Everyone please welcome Jessie Harrell! *round of applause*
Now, before we get into all the goodies Jessie has for us, let's talk about her book Destined.

When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.

As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.

Review:
I found Jessie through the blogosphere during the cover reveal for her book. I fell in love with the cover and had to get my hands on the book. I was not disappointed.
I love Greek mythology. It has always been a fascination of mine and if you know me at all, you know I mention writing a mythology book one day. Destined was a beautifully crafted re-telling of Psyche and Eros. I loved how accurate it stayed to the true story. Many of the aspects of Greece were brought into the story and told from the historical view point. It was a wonderful way to bring in the parts of history and make it interesting.
Psyche is a great character. She's high strong and opinionated, but she also has a heart that wants to be loved. Eros has been hurt before. Even as a god of love, he refuses to put his heart out for anyone. But then he sees something in Psyche that changes his mind, and his heart.
Their story is beautiful and heartwarming. I love the stories that deal with falling in love with something beside good looks. Like Beauty and the Beast. Those are the stories that touch the heart and Jessie has done so in Destined.
If you love mythology and romance, Destined is a book for you.

Fire Questions Round with Jessie Harrell:

Coffee or tea?
Coffee & lots of flavored creamer (Me too!)

Favorite name of all time!
I don't know if I can pick just one. I really wanted to name my daughters Rowan and Reegan. (FWIW - they ended up Morgan and Samantha) (Nice)

One person who inspires you most
My mom. She's awesome and so positive and upbeat. (Woohoo for moms!)

If you could live in any world, who's and where would you live?
If the move didn't have to be permanent, I'd love to be Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bones. I'd love to be able to have a mastery of any foreign language (let alone all the ones she had) and to be able to draw so well -- and fly -- all of that would be awesome too. (That book is awesome)

Favorite part about writing Psyche and Eros
Their romance and conjuring up all the fun ways Eros could be romantic with someone who didn't trust him very much was great.  The epilogue, though, is probably my favorite piece of writing in the book. (Le sigh on the epilogue.)

What inspired you to become a writer?
My husband said that we should write children's picture books, because "how hard can that be?" Turns out, it was too hard for me, so I started writing YA and never looked back. (Good choice)

One interesting not well known fact about you
I bit my nails my entire life, right up until my oldest daughter was born. For some inexplicable reason, I just quit once she came along. Poor thing bites her nails now though. Maybe I gave the habit to her upon birth??  Who knows. ( :-D)
Special sneak peak into Before, Eros story coming in February as part of the anthology In His Eyes.

Hunkered down in a rough wool cloak, I’d snuck in to watch the religious ceremony. I stayed against the perimeter, hoping to enjoy the spectacle anonymously. But the flames cast these creepy-seductive shadows against the walls, making me feel watched. And present in the moment of the dance.
The longer I watched, the more I wanted to join the swirling crowd. The movements of those performing the ritual were hypnotic, reminding me of the way Maenads twirl for Dionysus. But one figure dancing before the firelight stood out from the rest.
Her slender hips pulsed with the rhythm of the drums.  Soft, brown curls swirled down her back, caressing her shoulders and barely tickling her waist. I watched her move, entranced by the way motion flowed from her.
When she turned her head and caught my prying gaze, her eyes were as emerald as any gem. Finding my stare, she narrowed her lids for a moment. Then she smirked, shot me a wink, and went back to her dance.
That was all the invitation I needed.
The rest of the night was a blur of sour wine, too much smoke from the bonfire, and lust so consuming I thought it might swallow me whole. There I was, the god of Love, but she held all the power without even realizing it. Or maybe she did know. Maybe that was part of what intoxicated me too. In Greece, no mortal girl could bend me. None dared. But in Media, I was anonymous in a way that gave me a freedom to just exist. Here, I could be anyone. No pressures. No expectations. No women holding back in reverence to a god.
