Some stories are fairytales...but this isn't one.
Caelan Gregory's life fell apart the night he went home and opened the door to find his whole family murdered. Since then, his life has held no meaning. He's angry. He's bitter. He's barely human anymore. There's nothing left to remind him of the straight A student, and football quarterback he once was...but he wasn't a good person then, and he's certainly not a good person now. He's retreated into a world where all that exists is numbness and his passion for painting.
When Sutton Hale moves into the apartment across the hall from Caelan she's not prepared for her reaction to him. Something in his broken blue eyes calls to her - after all she's always had an irrational need to fix everything.
But Caelan doesn't do relationships or feelings. He does drugs and alcohol. However, he can't ignore his desire to get to know the raven haired woman across the hall.
Two broken souls trying to mend one another.
But not everything can be fixed.
In the end, Caelan and Sutton will have to learn that there is beauty in the ashes.
From Goodreads.com
This book is NOT for everyone. I know Micalea has said it and it's worth repeating. This book is not a fairytale, it's not about two people living happily ever after. At least not in the way conventional books write about. It is a NA Standalone Dark Contemporary Romance. Just a warning :)
That being said, I found this book amazing. No, I've never had my family murdered or gone through what Sutton has gone through, but at the same time, I can relate to the brokenness of both characters. And these two are beyond broken. They're shattered. It hurts to read their story, it pains you as a reader to see what kind of a life they've lived, but at the same time, it gives you hope that things can get better.
I think it was particularly relatable for me to read this book because I saw this kind of life in my line of work. I saw first hand how broken people can be. And I saw it when there was no hope. I'm not saying this book will leave you all warm and fuzzy at the end. It probably won't. I will be honest and say that I cried reading the last couple of chapters because they touched my heart.
Did I want a different ending? A part of me did. But at the same time, I understood the decisions these two had to make and the maturity they both arrived at, at the end.
That's what I loved most about the book. Is the growth of both Caelan and Sutton. The understanding that sometimes the hardest decision is the best one and that sometimes we need to let go, rebuild, start over.
It's hard to review this book without giving much away, but I want people to read it, because it's a story that deserves to be read.
It is DARK and TWISTED and filled with broken people, but just like the title says, there is Beauty in the Ashes and this story has proven that in it's pages. Micalea did a fantastic job, crafting a story that will stay with you long after you've read the last word.
Because I want everyone to have a chance to read this book, I'm giving an E-copy away!! All you have to do is fill out the form below!
a Rafflecopter giveaway
Even if you don't win, I still hope you pick up this book and see what it's all about for yourself. Just be prepared for the feels!

Book Spotlight: The Dark World by Cara Lynn Shultz
Paige Kelly is used to weird--in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league. Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demon slayer-and he isn't fazed by Paige's propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she'll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that's overrun by demons-and she might never make it home.
Goodreads.com
Paige hasn't had an easy life. She sees people no one else does, everyone thinks she's crazy, even her parents are more than concerned. Then, she gets attacked at school and the new kid, Logan is there to save the day and also to explain to Paige that she is definitely not crazy. And that's when the real fun begins.
You guys know I'm a huge fan of Cara's writing. There's just something about the way she tells her stories that are very fun to read. I like Paige as a main character. She's got some real issues she has to deal with throughout the book, especially when it comes to figuring out who she's supposed to be. There are some things that come into play, and I was thinking, yep, you go girl! I'm excited to see where Cara takes her next. I feel like there's a lot of potential in Paige's character.
Now, let's talk about Logan. Yay for an adorable good guy character! Seriously. I feel like there are so many bad boy characters out there (not that I mind. I LOVE me some bad boys). But I also LOVE me some good guys and Logan is all kinds of good. He's just genuine and I adore that. And I liked his and Paige's friendship.
Cara has created a great story, with interesting characters and a crazy world that I honestly do not want to live in. Ha. (Once you read it, you'll understand). And I really think you should read it! I look forward to more of Cara's books and can't wait to continue with this series. Dark World comes out May 27th! Get it, read it, love it!

Book Spotlight: Open Road Summer by Emery Lord
So I haven't done a book spotlight in a while. Sorry about that. I'm going to try to get back to reviewing books more often for you wonderful people.
After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking.
From Goodreads.com
Before I begin, can we please talk about this cover? I saw this book on Goodreads when the cover was first released and I added it to my TBR right then and there. Granted, I also really enjoyed the premise for the story, and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed.
I won't dive into the summary too much, because I feel like the small tidbit actually covers it pretty well. I loved the whole best friends on a road trip story, and this one pulled me right in.
Meet Reagan. She's your average troublesome tough girl. Honestly? She took me by surprise a bit when I first started the story. Maybe it's just because I haven't ready many stories with bad girl protagonist, but I have to say, I had to love Reagan. Well, except at the end of the book when she was stubborn, but that's a different point. What I liked about Reagan is how real she was. There wasn't any fluff about her, she just tells it like she sees it. Sure, she's cynical and untrustworthy and broken, but aren't we all a little? And I think that's why I could relate to her so much.
The other part of the story that I truly loved is the Reagan and Dee's friendship. Maybe I just need more contemporary in my life, but sometimes I feel like friendships get overlooked in books in leu of romance or other big deal problems. I really liked seeing how real Reagan and Dee were with each other, how it was truly about the other person for them. It's having one person pick up the broken pieces and hold you while you're trying to put them together, while, sometimes, crying your eyes out. It's what best friends are for and these two showed it well.
And yes, Matt. Let's talk about Matt. Oh holy goodness, that boy. He's just so undeniably sweet and good and everything a girl needs in her life. I loved how basically good he was, no pretenses with those he cared most about. He took care of those around him and he fought for what he wanted. Yes, his life wasn't perfect, but he did good with what's been handed to him and I respect that. I especially loved him and Reagan together. The tension between them was thick and real and so much fun to read as it all unraveled. It was just so good!
Open Road Summer is the perfect read for all those whole love stories of true friendship, figuring out who you are, and finding those special people you can trust. I'm excited to see what Emery Lord has in store for us next! Open Road Summer is now out. Get it, read it, love it!

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Neverwas (Amber House #2) by Kelly Moore, Tucker Reed, and Larkin Reed
"I was sixteen the second time I had my first kiss...."
At the end of AMBER HOUSE, Sarah made a choice that transformed everything--and now she must choose it all again.
Things are very different--better--for Sarah and her family: her Aunt Maggie grew up; her parents are happily married; her grandmother died after a long, productive and respected life. But other things are different too, and not for the better.
After growing up in the free country of the Pacific Northwest, Sarah Parsons has settled in at Amber House, the stately Maryland home that's been in her family for generations. But the world surrounding the House feels deeply wrong to Sarah. It's a place where the colonists lost the 1776 Insurrection, where the American Confederation of States still struggles with segregation, and where Sarah is haunted by echoes of a better world that she knows never existed.
Her friend Jackson shares these visions of a different world--and together, they manage both to remember the way things ought to be, and to plan a daring mission that will reset the universe once again. Sarah must figure out what has changed, and why, and how she can fix it--how she can find her way to another otherwhen.

REVIEW:
Neverwas is book two in the now trilogy of Amber House. If you guys remember, I reviewed book one last year and for me, it was a unique kind of a read. Well, Neverwas is like that. It's a story that is different and otherworldly.
The story picks up where we left off in book one, however, it's not the story that we know. This is a different universe, the choices of Sarah in book one changed the world that she knew. This part of the book was a bit difficult to wrap my mind around. There are certain issues that are predominant in this book and they're not too pleasant to read about. Sarah has much to learn, about herself and the world around her, in order to become who she needs to be.
This book is different from the first one, but still deals with family and the consequences of the choices we make. Yes, the whole different reality because of one small thing in book one is very hard to believe, but this is a supernatural kind of a story so anything is possible really. More than anything, for me, this book read almost like a completely different story. It's been a while since I read book one, so a few of the aspects I didn't even remember. You honestly may even be able to read this as a stand alone.
Neverwas is an interested story. I liked Jackson in this one much more than the last book. Sammy is still Sammy, and Sarah still works at protecting him from the world. Overall, Neverwas is definitely a different kind of a sequel, full of characters you've met, but never seen quite like this.
GIVEAWAY:
In NEVERWAS, Sarah must piece together the mystery of her forgotten past with the help of clues left behind by her great-grandmother, Fiona Warren. For readers interested in the chance to win a signed first-edition hardback of NEVERWAS -- with an exclusive hint for what's in story for Sarah in the final book, OTHERWHEN, hidden inside -- visit each blog on the tour for the month of December, collect the various lines from the poem, arrange them in the proper order, and submit the final sonnet by January 10th for a chance to win the special copy of NEVERWAS!

Book Spotlight: These Broken Stars (Starbound #1) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.
Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.
Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?
Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.
From goodreads.com
The book stars out with just your typical day on board of Icarus, a giant spaceship traveling the final frontier. We meet Lilac, the daughter of the richest man in the universe and Tarver, the young war hero, when their paths cross. These two don't exactly see eye to eye, each have their own position to play, but when the tragedy strikes, Lilac and Tarver are thrust together trying to survive on a planet that's not all they think it to be.
Guys. Guys!!! This book. I can't even. I seriously have no idea how to review it. I LOVED it so MUCH! I read it back in July and I really thought I'd get over how wonderful this story is, but I haven't. I want to read it again and again.
This book has all the makings of my favorite story. Of course, the book is set in space. Can you go wrong with that? Well, you can, but These Broken Stars definitely didn't. This book also has characters that I absolutely adore from the very beginning. Lilac is all kinds of a complex character. She has a part to play in her life, but when she's marooned (can you say marooned if you're on a planet?) as a half of the only two people left alive, she really has to learn a lot about herself. Yes, she may be spoiled and selfish, but she also has a great heart and as the story progresses, we learn and grow right along with her.
Now, let's talk about Tarver. Oh Tarver. If there is ever a hero in the midst of a storm, this guy is it. He's all kinds of swoony and strong and gorgeous and wonderful. You get the idea. He has his own prejudice to overcome, his own demons to battle, but just like Lilac, he grows throughout the book, making himself a better version of what he was before.
I love that about These Broken Stars. I love that the characters don't start out perfect, that you get to be annoyed with them, to be upset with their choices. Because in the end, when push comes to shove, they show the greatness of humanity in their actions. It's truly beautiful.
And the romance in this book is breathtaking. It's not the typical insta-love. These characters fight and disagree and even come to hate each other because of the societies expectations. But when it all comes down to it, when all the publicity of the world is stripped away, the two find each other in the rawest parts of the soul. It's breathtaking.
If you haven't noticed by now, I'm in love with this book. These Broken Stars had me at the edge of my seat from start to finish. Amie and Meagan have written a story that stays with you long after you've finished the last page. The world is beautiful and broken and realistic and the characters really capture your heart. I'll be buying this book and recommending it to everyone in the process.
These Broken Stars comes out tomorrow! I think you should go get yourself a Christmas present. You won't be disappointed!!
Happy reading,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Switched by Cassie Mae
Ever since high school, Kayla has been crazy for gorgeous football player Talon. But before she could muster the courage to tell him, he became a hot item with her beautiful BFF, Reagan. The only person who knows Kayla’s secret is Wesley, Talon’s best bud—and he’s got it bad for Reagan. Now they’re all in college together, hanging out 24/7. For Kayla, seeing the two lovebirds together is absolutely unbearable. So Kayla and Wesley hatch a plot to drive them apart before Talon has a chance to give Reagan the Christmas gift she’s been waiting for.
Soon enough, the once happy couple is fighting. Reagan suddenly can’t get enough of Wesley’s goofy sense of humor, and Talon seems to be paying more attention to Kayla than a guy who’s “only a friend” ever should. But just when everything seems to be falling into place, Kayla and Wesley accidentally spend a night together and discover a hitch in their plan they never considered: that switching partners may not lead to a perfect ending after all.
From Goodreads.com
This book was so adorable. So many feels.
So now that I've had a few days to think about this book and how I want to review it, I think I'm ready. Maybe. Possibly.
Okay, here it goes.
Guys, I READ THIS BOOK IN ONE SITTING.
That right there should say a lot about it. I don't have the luxury of just sitting down and reading a book in one sitting. Especially when those books are 500 pages long and I have things to do. Also, I haven't been reading much of just plain romance stories. But Switched really captured my heart in a quick and fun way, making me just devour the pages. This is definitely what I look for in an adorable romance read.
This book starts out with a mess. Kayla loves Talon. Wesley loves Reagan. Talon and Reagan love each other. Oh noes. Best friends in love with their best friend's significant other? Yeah, that doesn't seem like a recipe for disaster. So Kayla and Wesley devise a plan and that's when all the fun begins.
From the very beginning pages, I kind of really wanted to slap both Kayla and Wesley. Of course, in a loving way. Man, guys! Way to be little crying babies. I really do understand the anguish of wanting something you can't have, which one of us doesn't, and I think that's why I instantly connected with these two. Even as their little cry fest made me a little crazy.
All of the characters in this book are just so relatable, I wanted to hug them all. Really, by relatable I mean annoying, fun, horrible at decision making, and complete dorks. Come on guys, we've all been there. Kayla is definitely a crazy one and her friendship and scheme making with Wesley had me laughing out loud a number of times. Sure, they were a bit immature for their age at time, but who isn't when love is involved. Also, no matter how swoon worthy Talon was, I was a Wesley girl from the beginning. He's like that adorable boy next door who steals your heart when you aren't looking.
The dynamics between all the characters were fun, the interactions realistic, and the love story all kinds of sweet. Can you tell I'm just gushing over here? I just can't get over how adorable this book was! I was smiling while reading it for pretty much a large portion of the time. Seriously, if you're looking for a light and fluffy romantic comedy, Switched has all the makings!
(Awe Wesley)
Moving on. Seriously. Go read this book :)
Happy reading,
Valia

Proxy by Mindee Arnett: Excerpt and Giveaway!
Hello lovelies,
Today I am so excited to feature one of my all time favorite authors and friends, Mindee with her new novella Proxy. I'm beyond ecstatic for this series and I'm glad we get a glimpse into this world with this story. Mindee is amazing. Seriously, if you haven't read her debut yet, what are you waiting for? Now, I think I'm done with the fangirling for the moment. Let's talk about the book.
About the book:
If you need something stolen from any star system in the Confederation, you need look no further than the Shades. Jeth Seagrave and his band of teenage mercenaries have been making a name for themselves for being able to steal anything—and for disappearing before anyone is the wiser. Their latest job, a jewel heist on Grakkus, should be no different. But when Jeth's boss replaces a key member of his crew just before takeoff, and Jeth discovers a betrayal within his own ranks, he begins to suspect that not everyone is going to be coming back from his job alive.
Sounds great right? Now, you know you want to read more. Your wish is my command. (Just for right now. Don't get any ideas).

She’s addicted to jumping horses and telling tales of magic, the macabre, and outer space. She has far more dreams than nightmares. She's the YA author of The Nightmare Affair (Tor Teen), an urban fantasy series about a girl who is literally a nightmare and must use her skills to solve a murder, and the forthcoming science fiction series, Avalon (B+B, 1/21/2014), where Jeth and his teenage mercenaries need to pull off one last big job in order to earn their freedom.

Excerpt:
The thrill of the job never got old. Jeth Seagrave lived for it. For the way the anticipation sent electricity pulsing through his veins, making his blood burn hotter, his heart beat harder, and sharpening his senses until he felt like something more than human. A superhero from one of the ancient myths of First Earth, perhaps.
You’re no hero. The automatic thought skidded through his mind, barely registering. No, he wasn’t. He was a thief. One of the best.
And that was all that mattered. Never mind that he was only sixteen. Never mind that most of his crew was even younger. Together they were an unstoppable force, a gang of teenage thieves their adult marks never saw coming. The thrill pulsed harder inside him, and with an effort he focused on the nav monitor in front of him. They would be entering the patrolled zone around the planet Grakkus soon.
To his left, Celeste piloted the Debonair forward, her hands steady on the control column. Jeth would’ve preferred to pilot this job—he would prefer to pilot every job—but he and Celeste took turns. All of the members of the Malleus Shades held specific roles that played to their strengths. Celeste’s forte was counterintelligence, particularly the art of distracting marks. Jeth’s was strategy, and he typically took point on every job. But when it came to piloting, he and Celeste were equally matched.
Jeth drew a breath, still struggling to focus. He couldn’t help it. The upcoming job was the most challenging, complicated one they’d taken on yet. The target was located in a vault at the top of a tower only accessible through the emperor of Grakkus’s personal bedchambers—not some insignificant politician or petty crime lord, but an emperor. Pulling it off would be like flying a spaceship through a solar storm without getting fried. A grin threatened to break on his face. The job was going to be fun, and with a payout well worth the risk.
At last the nav computer flashed an indicator that they were heading into the patrolled zone.
Celeste glanced at him, her dark eyes narrowing. Straight black hair hung in a blunt cut down to her shoulders. “Are you going to turn on the stealth drive or what?”
“I’m thinking about it.” A part of him didn’t want to. The so-called stealth drive was brand new and untested, at least by the Shades. If it didn’t work, things were going to get a whole lot more interesting real quick. And if it did work, well, then things weren’t going to get interesting. He couldn’t decide which he preferred.
In the end, Celeste made the decision for him, reaching over to a switch on a sleek new section of the control panel. Jeth sighed. It was the right thing to do, of course, and there would be plenty of risks to be had once they landed.
Or it might not work properly, he thought, examining the nav monitor once more. Best not to blindly trust some newfangled technology. Within minutes he spotted a blimp on the monitor, a patrol to their starboard. The ship was far off, but within range to scan them.
“What should I do?” A hint of panic colored Celeste’s voice. They had never before flown so boldly through a patrolled area.
“Hold course,” Jeth said, not taking his eyes off the blimp. So far the patrol ship hadn’t given any sign that it had spotted them.
“You sure you’re right?”
“Aren’t I always?”
Celeste snorted. “Do you want an honest answer?”
“Nope. I prefer my own version of the truth.”
“Right.” Celeste tightened her grip on the controls. According to the instructions they’d received from their employer, who owned the Debonair, the stealth drive worked best when the ship maintained a constant speed and course. Any sharp turns or drastic acceleration or deceleration could turn up on a system scanning for thruster signatures, stealth drive or no.
Maybe it was for the best that Celeste was piloting, Jeth realized. He would’ve been tempted to test the theory of what constituted “drastic.”
They passed out of range of the patrol a few minutes later, and Jeth sat back in the copilot’s chair, folding his arms across his chest as he tried to ignore his disappointment. They flew within range of three more patrols but moved past them without incident, finally breaching Grakkus’s atmosphere.
Once through, Celeste headed for their rendezvous point, an isolated forested area a few hundred kilometers outside of the capital city. Beyond the bridge’s main windows, the first rays of sunlight were breasting the horizon, heralded by a swath of purple, pink, and vermillion.
At last Celeste set the Debonair down on a large stretch of tall grass the color of seaweed. She powered off the engines and turned on the auxiliary, which would keep the shipboard systems running, including the stealth drive. It wasn’t likely that anyone would spot them out here—the place was well off the main thoroughfares, not to mention how inhospitable the swamp surrounding them was—but Jeth decided not to point that out.
Celeste stood and stretched, the movement languid as if she were part cat. The dark, fitted clothing she wore aided the illusion. “So, what now?”
Jeth checked his watch, which he’d synced to Grakkus time. “I say breakfast or lunch, whichever works, and then a couple hours’ R and R. The setup man’s not due to arrive until fourteen hundred.” They’d had to get here early to avoid being detected during landing. The stealth drive hid them from sight, but it couldn’t disguise the sound of the engines or the wind raised by the thrusters.
“Think I’m going to shower again, before—” Celeste broke off as a voice echoed over the ship’s comm system.
“Um, Boss? We sorta have a situation. You might want to get down to the common room.”
Jeth blinked, all his disappointment from their unadventurous journey vanishing in the space of a single breath. It wasn’t often that Will Shady sounded nervous.
Wondering if maybe the ship was on fire, Jeth turned and headed off the bridge with Celeste quick on his heels. They arrived in the common room on the deck below moments later. Jeth stopped in the doorway, surveying the scene. There wasn’t a fire. There wasn’t anything amiss at all, as far as he could tell. Shady was sitting on one of the sofas, his attention focused on the 3D projection from his portable gaming system, a wave of bloodthirsty robots coming at him, each one falling to his simulated gunfire. The comm unit he’d used to radio the bridge sat discarded on the sofa beside him, in danger of being swallowed by a cushion.
Jeth approached him. “What are you doing?”
“Practicing,” Shady said, not looking up. The scowl on his face as he let off a triple blast, drilling a robot right between its bulbous black eyes, made his features look distinctly leonine, the appearance aided by his shaggy mane of blond hair. Shady’s assigned role in the Malleus Shades was ordnance officer.
Jeth put his hands on his hips. “We’re not going to be shooting anybody on this job. And please tell me this wasn’t the thing I needed to see.”
Shady shook his head. “Nope. It’s in that storage locker.” He pointed to the row of lockers along the wall across from them. “The one in the middle.”
Jeth arched an eyebrow. He considered pressing Shady for more, but knew there wasn’t much point. All the crew dealt with prejob nerves in different ways, and once engrossed in his ritual video game, it was hard to get Shady to concern himself with anything else.
Jeth crossed the floor to the locker in question, wondering where the Debonair had been last. Their employer used the ship for lots of different jobs, and it was possible it had been parked planetside somewhere a wild animal could’ve gotten in. An image of something furry and clawed and with teeth the size of fingers flashed through Jeth’s mind. He wasn’t wearing a gun, and he briefly considered getting one before finding out what had Shady so nervous, but then he shrugged and pulled the door open.
There was something alive in there all right, but it wasn’t a wild animal. Even still, it took Jeth several moments to come to grip with what it was. Who it was.
Awesome right? Well, that's not all. Now it's time for the giveaway!

Book Spotlight: The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barns
Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.
What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.
Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.
Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.
From Goodreads.com
We meet Cassie as she's working at a restaurant, her natural ability of reading people playing out in her mind. She's very good at studying someone and giving a rundown of an individual. Then, Michael walks in. He asks her a few random questions, leaves a business card, and walks out. The card is from FBI and they want Cassie and her particular set of skills.
When Cassie arrives at the house, she finds a few other kids much like herself. They too have special abilities and they are being trained to solve cold cases. Yet, as the events unfold, it's clear that there is more going on than meets the eye.
Now, I'm a huge fan of Criminal Minds and this book was pitched as that for YA. Needless to say, I was super excited to get an opportunity to review it. I really did enjoy this book. It was a super quick read for me. I may have had too many expectations for it to be like Criminal Minds.
I liked Cassie just fine. She had some good qualities and some annoying ones. Which I guess just makes her human. I was a huge fan of her determination. I'm excited to see how her character develops in the future.
On the other hand, we have the boys. I'm probably the only one cheering for Dean here, but I can't help it. I love his broody gorgeous heroic self. Yes, I see the appeal of Michael and all his bad boy rep. But I'm so honestly done with bad boys. I feel like they're automatically the winners in every story nowdays. What about them good boys? Come on now.
Overall, this was a good story with some interesting characters. I really like the feel of the story and I'm excited to see where Jennifer takes it next. This book is out today! Let me know what you think!
Happy reading,
Valia

Book Spotlight: Preservation Series by Rachael Wade and Giveaway!!!
Hello lovelies,
Today, I have a special treat for you! The Preservation Series is stopping by my blog for a little visit.
Fear is sabotage’s sweetest weapon.
Kate has no time for meaningless romantic charades, and definitely no time for hot college professors who are full of themselves and smitten with her. Constantly battling eviction notices, tuition she can’t afford, and a sick, dependent mother, the last thing she needs is to be distracted with someone else’s complicated baggage.
When she stumbles into Ryan Campbell’s creative writing class, he is only “Mr. Campbell” to her, until Ryan finds himself captivated by her writing and she is forced to face their mutual attraction. His cocky know-it-all syndrome is enough to send her running in the other direction, and his posse of female admirers and playboy reputation are enough to squander any odds in her favor.
But underneath Ryan’s abrasive facade is something to behold, and she can’t stay away for long. Ryan and Kate must decide who they’re willing to become and fight against their former selves if they want to make things work. That’s if academia, vicious vixens, old skeletons, and their own mastery at self-destruction don’t pummel their efforts first.
Old Habits Die Hard.
Ryan Campbell is not only leaving his title of Professor behind to move on to bigger and better things at Simon and Warden Publishing, he’s also become Seattle’s rising literary star. Sitting on the overwhelming cusp of newfound fame, he learns soon enough that being popular has its downside.
Attracted to the buzz surrounding his new career, former lovers begin to creep back into his life, and potential ones emerge with enticing advances. While he works to juggle reserved, yet stressful, wedding plans with Kate and his new public image, he has enough to manage without worrying about Carter and Dean—Kate’s loveable albeit eccentric friends—and their latest shenanigans.
Surrounded by a lifestyle that includes temptation at every turn, Ryan finds himself immersed in a world full of scandal and lies, where his oldest weaknesses thrive and his ghosts return to haunt him. Questioning whether his life with Kate is his best path, he must discover if he’s still capable of being the man he aspired to be when she first became his, or if happily ever after is only an illusion.
Featuring characters from Love and Relativity.
Carter Montgomery spent most of his life blending in, and he liked it that way. It was always better to be seen, not heard. And while a theatric streak and friendly demeanor might have fooled most people, he knew the truth—he was the shy one. The quiet kid most people forgot about. Some might have considered that a bad thing, but those people all wanted to be in the spotlight.
The only place Carter didn’t mind attention was on stage, with The Hellions. Once content in his comfort zone in Seattle, Washington, he only knew three things: confrontation was to be avoided, keeping the peace was priority, and the moment he lost Kate Parker to Professor Ryan Campbell, he had no clue what to do with his life. Playing gigs, working at Pike Place Market, and watching BBC after the love of his life sailed off into the sunset just wasn’t going to cut it anymore.
Desperate to escape his rut, he takes a cue from Kate and chooses a random place to relocate—a small island across the country, where no one knows his name and memories of unrequited love aren’t found at every turn. Just when he thinks he’s found the perfect place to unwind and sink back into the shadows, in bursts Whitney Sinclair, a saucy firecracker who loves life and refuses to settle for second best. Full of contagious energy, she dares him to be brave, convincing him that it might finally be time to tell the world what he wants.
It might be time to make a declaration.

Review:
This series is all kinds of interesting. We have the main heroine Kate, who's a proud stand up-ish girl. Ryan who's the playboy. And Carter, the musician. The three books come together in one intricate story. I was super excited to see Carter got his own story. I have quite the love for quiet boys, those who don't necessary strike you as the "hero" type. Also, musician. Hello. There's just something about him that pulls you in. He goes off to find himself, and that he does. Also, he finds Whitney. She's a great contrast to his quiet personality and make a good team. Declaration can be read as a stand-alone, or part of the series. I hope you guys check it out and see what it's about for yourselves.
